After the recent release of “Mismo amor,” Mexican singer Julieta Venegas returns even stronger with a new track and music video. In a dark room and playing the piano alone is the setting for the music video accompanying “Caminar sola,” a warning cry about the fear that terrifies women when they walk alone in the dark on the street. It is a solemn and dark clip, where a Venegas is dressed in black, denouncing an unjust and painful injustice.

The song, which is the second single released off her new album, is based on a personal story. However, beyond her own experience, it is a sad reality that women live all over the world.

“I wrote it because I needed to express the fear that women feel for living in our bodies. I try to bring the subject closer to the men I am close to, because I think we have to talk a lot and encourage ourselves to review what we take for granted,” she wrote on Instagram.

The initial piano gives way to a sharp bass line, which accompanied by a battery that does not change tempo throughout the song, but brings seriousness and depth to the song. In the chorus she adds some subtle synthesizers, as well as open and clean chords of an acoustic guitar.

With her lyrics, Venegas perfectly sums up the uncertainties and fears that so many women suffer during party nights.

“I want to stay here dancing, but I can't, no, no, I can't. Because I'm afraid to go for a walk alone. Lower your eyes better, do not provoke me my love,” she recites.

The artist from Tijuana wants different generations to come together to express their same feelings: “My wish is that it makes us reflect and talk a lot. We have to take care of ourselves and protect ourselves, because we know what it feels like,” she continued in her Instagram post.

The careful staging of the video was directed by Anita and Lola Piñeiro. They decided to place Venegas as the sole protagonist, while she walks and sings through a dimly lit room, looking in all directions with suspicion at what might happen.

With “Caminar sola,” Venegas continues to present herself as a big defender of feminism.

“I am one of the feminists who believes that, in order to think about changes, men must also be reached,” she said.

In the song she also tries to explain to a brother what many women experience. It is not only about the fear of returning home alone, but also about the complexes they suffer in the opinions of other people.

The song was produced by Alex Anwandter, who was able to perfectly capture the intentions of the Mexican artist. Venegas has also confirmed new dates for her 2022 tour, and her Spanish fans are celebrating. Among her new concerts, she announced performances in Malaga, Tenerife and Madrid between Sept. 10 and 18.
