In a fervent response to an antisemitic incident at his Philadelphia bar, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy expressed outrage and announced decisive actions aimed at addressing the matter through education rather than retribution.

The controversy erupted over the weekend when a video surfaced showing a bottle-service sign displaying an antisemitic message at Barstool Sansom Street, a bar affiliated with Portnoy's brand in Center City. The footage, which quickly went viral, depicted waitresses presenting a light-up sign bearing the offensive phrase, prompting widespread condemnation.

Portnoy, who is Jewish, took to social media with an "emergency press conference," visibly shaken and angered by the incident. "I've been shaking. I've been so mad for the last two hours," he stated, vowing to hold those responsible accountable.

Initially, Portnoy expressed intentions to "ruin" those involved but later shifted his approach, emphasizing education over destruction. He revealed plans to send the individuals responsible to tour the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, hoping the experience would serve as a profound lesson against hate.

"These are young, drunk morons," Portnoy remarked. "Do you really want to ruin somebody's life? Maybe I can use this as a teaching moment."

The two waitresses involved were promptly terminated, and a Temple University student identified in connection with the incident has been placed on interim suspension pending further investigation.

Temple University President John Fry issued a statement condemning the act, asserting that antisemitism has no place at the institution and that any students found to be involved will face strict disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion.

The bar also released a statement expressing deep regret over the incident, stating, "This unfortunate incident is the opposite of what we stand for, and we will be doubling down on efforts to prevent such actions in the future."

Portnoy's decision to focus on education reflects a broader commitment to combating antisemitism through awareness and understanding. "Hopefully they learn something and maybe their lives aren't ruined and they think twice," he said.

The incident has sparked conversations about the rise of antisemitism and the importance of proactive measures to address hate speech and discrimination.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect.
