NASA will fund research in Chemistry, Biology and Electronics in Puerto Rico

University of Puerto Rico at Bayamón announced the start of the "PR NASA Space Grant Consortium" to provide financial incentive for research projects.

University of Puerto Rico at Bayamón (UPRB) in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced the start of the PR NASA Space Grant Consortium - UPR Bayamón project, which will provide financial incentives for research and innovation projects in the departments of Chemistry, Biology, and Electronics of the institution.

The initiative is part of a proposal led by UPR Bayamón professor and external aid coordinator, Dr. Javier Avalos, and its effectiveness will extend from September 2022 to July 31, 2023.

As part of the program, four research projects will be carried out by the Chemistry, Biology, and Electronics departments of the UPRB. These are: Monitoring of water quality in marine reserves in the northeastern and southeastern area of Puerto Rico from the Department of Chemistry, which is directed by Dr. Laura Santiago Perez, and will have the collaboration of Dr. Javier Avalos.

The Biology Department will carry out a project known as Wetland and mangrove assessment for Punta Tuna and Punta Santiago wetlands, led by Dr. Elsie Rivera Ocasio and Dr. Tamara Heartsill Scalley.

The Electronics Department will carry out the project Programming of intermediate level microcontrollers for use in the electronics area, led by professors Ismael Jiménez and Jorge Ramón. They will also carry out the project: Transformation of the course and Robotic laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon, led by Dr. Juan Sanchez and Professor Jorge Ramon.

"We are very excited to be able to continue strengthening the scientific work of the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon through this important initiative. We urge our community of students who are interested in learning about and participating in this research to approach the researchers of each of the projects so that they can witness first-hand these enriching experiences. We also congratulate all the students and professors who obtained this benefit," said Dr. Miguel Vélez Rubio, rector of the UPRB.

Dr. Javier Avalos emphasized that "this project will contribute to achieve the goals and objectives that each of these research projects have planned. I am grateful for the support provided by the researchers, as well as to the authorities and administrative personnel for all the support provided for the development of this proposal."
