Declining enrollment and financial deficit have led to cuts at Cabrini University, in Pennsylvania. In early 2021, 46 positions were cut — and in a more recent round, top administrators also entered the list, such as Cabrini’s provost, associate provost and three deans.

Considering that Cabrini is a private institution, the drop in enrollment has intensively impacted its financial outlook. In 2016, enrollment was around 2,300 students, while now it is at roughly 1,500. The university is currently running a $5 million to $6 million deficit with a budget of $45 million, according to Inside Higher Ed.

The changes don’t stop at the cuts. The university will also downsize from 18 department chairs to eight; and, in a big structural change, the School of Education will move into the School of Arts and Sciences — making Cabrini go from three to two colleges.

As for reasons, Cabrini’s interim president, Helena Drinan mentioned to Inside Higher Ed the unsuccessful strategies that have been made to boost enrollment and revenue. From emphasizing international recruitment to online education, none showed the expected outcomes.

Administrators are now seeking partnerships, and a possible merger isn’t off the table.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education — the body that accredits Cabrini — requested a supplemental report from the institution, due Nov. 16. Although confidential, the commission stated it was asking for information on planning, resources and institutional improvement and governance, leadership, and administration.

A commission spokesperson said the outcome of the report would be posted on its website.
