Argentina, 1985, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, tells the story of prosecutors Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo, who in 1985 brought the commanders of the last dictatorship of the country to trial. The military was accused of having committed crimes against humanity during the regime of Jorge Rafael Videla.
The film, directed by Santiago Mitre, is inspired by these real events and shows how both prosecutors handled the case without being intimidated by political power and threats.
Available on Prime, Argentina, 1985 received the nomination for 'Best Picture - Non-English Language' at the upcoming Golden Globes.
Alongside this Latin American production is 'Pinocchio' by Guillermo del Toro, which is nominated in the categories 'Best Animated Film,' 'Best Soundtrack' and 'Best Song.' The film, directed by the renowned Mexican director, "gives a twist to the classic tale of the wooden puppet that comes to life in this stop-motion animated musical."
It is also available on Netflix.
This 2022 has been a very important one for Latin American stars in Hollywood. Among them is Ana de Armas, who stars in Blonde — a biopic of the famous Marilyn Monroe. For her performance in the Netflix feature film, de Armas was nominated in the category of 'Best Dramatic Actress.'
In addition to the Cuban-Spanish actress, other Latina actresses have been nominated. In the 'Best Actress in a Television or Musical Series' category, Selena Gomez will compete — for her leading role in the series Only Murders in the Building — with Jenna Ortega for her performance in the series Wednesday, recently released on Netflix.
The actress of Argentine origin, Anya Taylor-Joy, has also been nominated in the category 'Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Film' for her performance in The Menu.
The jury has also highlighted the role of Mexican actor Diego Luna in the series Andor from the Star Wars universe and nominated him in the ‘Best Actor in a Television Series’ category. Luna stars in the production with Rosario Dawson (as Ashoka), Pedro Pascal (as The Mandalorian) and Ewan McGregor (as Obi-Wan Kenobi). Andor is available on Disney+.
Young Mexican actor Diego Calva has also been nominated in the 'Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical' category for his role of Manny Torres, a Latino in the film industry in the 1920s, in the movie Babylon. The film, directed by French-American director Damien Chazelle, will premiere in the United States theaters on Dec. 25, 2022.
The Golden Globes will take place in California on Jan. 10, 2023.
