The television series La Reina del Sur tells the story of a powerful fictional drug trafficker named Teresa Mendoza, who is currently locked up in a U.S. maximum security prison for the murder of DEA agents.

The third season begins with Teresa still in a four-year solitary confinement.

"Four years have passed since being in a prison and it brings other things to head. It obviously brings a desire for freedom and revenge, to be once again with her daughter. We are going to see a warrior and craziest Teresa. Now she has absolutely nothing to lose," said the starring actress of the series, Kate del Castillo, in an interview with People en Español.

The new episodes of the show were shot in several Latin American cities, including Santa Marta in Colombia, Machu Picchu in Peru, and the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia.

"Working in Latin America is something special for me, because we have never shown it in the way we are going to present it now," del Castillo said in a video released by Telemundo.

According to the Mexican actress, the new season has much more action than the first or second season of La Reina del Sur.

"We're away from the drug trade and it becomes more of a political thriller," she said.

Alongside del Castillo, the cast of La Reina del Sur is comprised of Mexican actor and film producer Humberto Zurita, Portuguese soap opera and series actor Pêpê Rapazote, Colombian actress Isabella Sierra and Mexican dancer and singer Kika Edgar. The cast is rounded out by Alejandro Calva, Tiago Correa, Eduardo Yáñez, Lincoln Palomeque, Antonio Gil, Emmanuel Orenday, Cuca Escribano, Sara Vidorreta, Agata Clares, Dmitry Anisimov, Noe Hernández, Horacio Garcia Rojas, Ed Trucco, Carlos Valencia, Arturo Ríos, Denia Agalianou, Anderley Palomino, Fernando Solorzano, and Victor Rebull.

Carlos Bolado, Carlos Villegas and Claudia Pedraza served as directors on the new season. The script was written by Lina Uribe and Darío Vanegas.

The new season of La Reina Del Sur will premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. on Telemundo for the United States and Puerto Rico.
