The upcoming television series Griselda will star actress Sofía Vergara in the title role. A Netflix production, it will focus on the story of the Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, also known as 'The Black Widow' and 'The Godmather of Cocaine'

Colombian singer Karol G will portray the character of Carla, one of the women who works for Griselda, trafficking drugs from Colombia to the United States.

This is the television debut of the music artist, who has a rising career in the music world.

“It's a great role because there's real character development. She (Carla) sees what she does as a job, but also as a way to support her family, and she is tough!” said the reggaeton singer in an interview with Billboard.

The television series Griselda will feature six episodes. Its premiere date is yet to be determined.

Who was Griselda Blanco?

She was one of the biggest Colombian drug traffickers in the 1970s and 1980s. The cartel that she led, in Medellín, traced drug trafficking routes from Colombia to Miami, and from there  to many other points within the United States. According to U.S. authorities, these routes were the same used later by well-known Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Escobar.

Blanco was considered a ruthless woman, who did not hesitate to order the assassinations of her enemies and those who had betrayed her. She was called 'The Godmother of Cocaine' and 'The Queen of Cocaine' because, according to DEA estimates, she managed to move drugs worth more than $1 billion a year during her decade of operation. The illegal trafficking made her earn around $80 million monthly. She also was called 'The Black Widow' because of the number of partners, men and women, whom she had dated. She also had four children with a number of problems.

In 1985, federal agents arrested Griselda in California and she served a 19 year jail sentence in a federal prison. In 2004, she was released and returned to Medellín, where she lived until 2012, when a man killed as she was leaving a store. She was 69 years old at the time.

Much mystery still continues to surround the figure of 'The Black Widow', and the series Griselda is not the first screen production out to portray her life. One of them was the documentary Cocaine Cowboys II, released in 2008, when Griselda was still alive. In 2017, the movie Cocaine Godmother, starring actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, did the same in theaters.
