Guatemalan DJ Diamanté Anthony Blackmon, known more popularly as GORDO, is on a mission to help communities like the one he grew up in by building schools. It's why he recently announced the construction of second using his own funds.

The school opens with the "commitment to help children and young people overcome disadvantages and create promising opportunities for tomorrow," he said in a released statement.

"My childhood in Guatemala made me who I am today, and I am honored to give back to tomorrow's generation in my native country. I dedicate this school to my aunt, my uncle and my late cousin Catherine, with whom I grew up in Guatemala," GORDO continued.

The DJ also offered an anecdote about the importance of education, which for him comes from his personal experience. He mentioned that his "second mother" used to drive students from private and public schools all over Guatemala City. This, and his own upbringing in Guatemala, revealed the inequalities between those born into relative privilege and those born into extreme poverty.

Even before his family moved to the United States in hopes of finding a better life, GORDO's childhood was marked by the affection of his parents and the desperation of a world in which so many people are forced to sacrifice their potential to earn money.

"It is for this reason that education is so highly valued by those who know what it is like not to have one. Playing regularly at many of the most prestigious venues in the world," he said.

The Guatemalan DJ and producer teamed up with the nonprofit Seeds of Learning to build the school and improve the prospects of young people living in rural areas of Central America.

The new school, Edificio Taraka, will be located in Nuevo Eden, a town in the San Marcos region of Guatemala.
