Sunday, September 8, marked the 35th edition of Feria del Barrio. AL DÍA was honored to be a community investor for this year’s celebration. The festival, held every year in the heart of Latino Philadelphia at “El Centro del Oro” — the business and arts district in Kensington and Fairhill — is a celebration of Latino culture, family and community.

A plethora of performances

This year, Feria del Barrio entertained its annual thousands of attendees with performances from Grupo Compas 48, Grupo Muévete, Los Tecuanes, Pancho Bongó y Su Orquesta, and Anthony Colon and Tino Serrano.

“Bomba” arrives

The headliner for the day was Ballet Folklórico Hermanos Ayala, a renowned “bomba” dance group hailing from Loíza, Puerto. The group formed in 1959 and their September 8 performance at Feria del Barrio marked their first ever in Philadelphia. “Bomba” draws origin from Puerto Rico’s history of African slavery and is an expression of the Afro-Puerto Rican community.
