Smaller urban locations are what Target is focusing on in the near future, making Center City Philadelphia a prime target for the retailer.

Three new locations will open in the city over the next two years. The locations: Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West and Logan Square.

According to Target, the Rittenhouse (at 19th and Chestnut) and Washington Square (at 12th and Chestnut) locations are slated to open in July 2016. Both will stock apparel, home and beauty items and fresh groceries. Both locations will also offer order pick-up. The Rittenhouse location will be 21,000 sq. ft. over two floors compared to the 19,000 sq. ft the Washington Square West location will offer. These locations were announced in the summer.

The Logan Square location was just announced last week. The Philadelphia Business Journal reported the location at 2001 Pennsylvania Ave. is the larger of the three at 30,000 sq. ft.. It is currently occupied by Whole Foods, which is planning to relocate next fall. In the article, Natalie Kostelni of the journal reports that the new locations are part of Target’s strategy to expand into urban areas and providing a smaller “flexible format Target.”

“It initially labeled these stores, many of which are in urban areas, as City Target and Target Express, but now the company plans to simply call them Target and re-brand existing ones with its trademark bulls eye,” wrote Kostelni in her article.

The newly announced location near the Art Museum will offer apparel, health and beauty items, selected grocery items, and home items aimed at apartment and condo dwellers. It is scheduled to open October 2017.
