A recent study on Latinos in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics reports on the 25 colleges in the U.S. that graduate the most Latino students. Using data from 2013, Excelencia in Education, the nonprofit group that compiled the report, found that 2 percent of all U.S. institutions graduate one-third of Latinos who earn STEM credentials.

And although the number of Latinos earning credentials in STEM has increased over the last four years, they still only represent 9 percent of all STEM credentials earned.

“While it is promising that the number of Latinos earning STEM credentials has significantly increased since 2010, the report makes clear, and Microsoft agrees, that more needs to be done for Latinos to earn a higher proportion of total STEM degrees and be equipped for the higher-wage jobs of the 21st century,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Microsoft Worldwide.

Latinos working in STEM fields also are concentrated in lower-paying jobs, with a higher representation in service fields than in professional occupations.

“The report shines a light on what many of us know to be true: that diversification within STEM postsecondary education, particularly among Latinos over the last decade, has been largely in the area of certificate/associate levels and diminishes at each successive level,” Gabriel Montaño, a research scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and president of the Society for Chicanos and Native Americans in Science. “The result is an increasing discrepancy in positions of leadership within the STEM workforce.”
