Barely three weeks into the New Year, education has been touted as the most pressing issue in 2015. Mayoral hopefuls have already been rallying support behind the issue, calling for reform and fresh evaluation of the budget crisis. Just yesterday, Martin Luther King Day brought thousands of Philadelphians into the streets of Center City bearing messages about fair funding to and the accessibility of public schools.

Alongside this discussion is a simultaneous one about the city’s poverty. But there’s some good news that will hopefully assuage anxieties about the uncertain outcomes of these issues.

Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia (CSFP) has issued 2,000 new need-based scholarships for grades K through 8. These are intended to provide four years of tuitioned school for low-income families in Philadelphia. The best part? The children and family are given the school of their choosing.

The first 10,000 applications submitted will be entered into a random lottery. There is a strict deadline of March 1, 2015 for all applications, and the lottery will be drawn on March 12. Applications can be filled out onlineon the CSFP website, or in person at The Free Library of Philadelphia.
