Al Dia and other media organizations have been reporting an increase in ICE raids. The question arises: When will these end? The answer: no time soon.

Why? Because ICE is carrying out its mandate: absent immigration reform, clean up the U.S. and get rid of anyone who is here illegally no matter what their contribution to this country may be.

Is ICE “wrong” to do this? Well, how do you define “wrong”? Is it “wrong” to enforce the law, to protect the U.S. borders so that we know who is living here among us? The answer: No.

Is it “wrong” to ask individuals who have been waiting patiently outside the U.S. for years, perhaps pursuant to a 4th preference family based petition filed by a U.S. citizen brother or sister that has taken over 10 years to process, to remain outside the U.S., living in poverty, when their next door neighbor in their home country crosses the border illegally or enters on a false passport, to continue to wait patiently outside of the U.S. when that same next door neighbor is now in the U.S., earning money, of course without valid work authorization, but here nonetheless? The answer: Yes.

Is it “ wrong” to separate families, to tell mothers and fathers that they, after 16 years of living and working in the U.S., must return to their home country and bring their  17 year old son, who remembers nothing of his home country since he was brought to the U.S. when he was only 2 years of age and thinks and feels like an American, that his senior year of High School must be disrupted and he must return “home”—“home” to a country that he does not consider to be his home?

Is it “wrong” to tell a mother, picked up in one of the recent raids, that she must return to Mexico but that her 16 year old daughter, who was born in the U.S, and is a U.S. citizen,  can stay, alone (and unprotected) in the U.S.? And please, what do you tell that mother in the face of her tears, when she tells you that she is willing to return to Mexico but that her daughter refuses to go with her?

So much is so very wrong now that it is difficult to weed out the “right” from the “wrong”. What is clear is that the U.S. has the absolute duty and obligation to protect its border and control illegal immigration. What is even clearer is that as ICE carries out its mandate, the human toll of this border battle is devastating to families and to those who come here for one thing and one thing only: the ability to work and to feed their families.
