Religious minorities in the United States are far more likely to have attended college or a vocational school than members of the Christian majority, according to a review conducted by the Pew Research Center, based on data from 151 countries.

The Pew study, based on data from 2010, says that only 36% of the 267 million Christians in the United States had a postsecondary education, including college or a vocational school. That made them the least-educated religious group in the country.

The Hindus were the more likely to have college degrees (almost three times as likely as Christians), followed by the Jews (more than twice). Buddhists, Muslims and those who said they were religiously unaffiliated were also more likely to have a college degree than those who identified themselves as Christians.

On a global scale, Jews are better educated than any other major religious group in the world, with an average of 13.4 years of schooling and a majority going on to higher education, according to Pew. The main reason for the disparity is that Jews are largely concentrated in Israel and the US, countries with high levels of education.

The study also found an education gap between men and women within religious groups. Data collected indicates that educational differences among the faiths inside the US were rooted in immigration policies that favor highly educated and highly skilled visa applicants, as well as in political, economic and historical factors. That would explain  the presence of a Muslim and Hindu high educated elite in the nation, versus a mass of low-educated (Christian) Latino immigrants.

As reported in The Guardian today.
